Watts Bridge Memorial Airfield is the home of the Brisbane Airshow.
The airfield is without doubt the premier recreational airfield in South East Queensland, located 5nm from the small country township of Toogoolawah, an easy 1-hour drive from the state’s capital Brisbane. The airfield features three well-formed grass runways which are suited to virtually all types of aircraft used for sport and recreational flying. The local area makes for extremely safe operations with large open paddocks surrounding the airfield. Weather conditions permit year-round flying with a prevailing wind from the S.E., usually at less than 15 knots. The airfield is located outside Brisbane and Amberley controlled airspace, with a lower limit of 7,500′, eminently suited to aerobatic and glider operations.
Watts Bridge Memorial Airfield’s runways, taxiways and drainage systems were originally built during World War II as part of the nation’s defence program. In the early 1980’s a small dedicated group “re-discovered” Watts Bridge and set about reclaiming the airfield, envisioning an airpark style development providing a wide range of general facilities, services and amenities. The airfield now encourages appropriate private and commercial investment, always in keeping with the concept of an open and affordable recreational aviation centre.
The airfield is the home base for several active aviation clubs, including the Queensland Chapter of the Australian Aerobatic Club, the Brisbane Valley Sport Aviation Club and the Queensland Warbirds and Vintage Aircraft Association. The combined membership of these clubs covers the entire aviation spectrum including recreational, aerobatic and commercial pilots, flight instructors, aircraft maintenance personnel, amateur and experimental aircraft builders and a wide range of general aviation enthusiasts.
Watts Bridge Memorial Airfield is wholly owned, operated and maintained by our members, all of whom are absolutely passionate about aeroplanes and flying. We actively encourage anyone with an abiding interest in aviation to come visit the airfield to experience first-hand what we all enjoy so much. Membership is open to everyone and who knows?? After sampling first-hand what we have to offer, you too may decide to become a member, build a hangar or even join a homebase group.
